BOULDER, CO – A lone University of Colorado student walks through the Norlin Quad during lunchtime on the CU campus on Monday, March 16, in Boulder. Making a shift was easier than expected given my ability to scrap together ideas on changed circumstances. In this case, create something with little shop access, low shipping dependability, and ultimately a much lower budget. With Corona affecting everyone, I had to decide how I wanted to shift and what I could manage given the new adjusted circumstances. The original aesthetic of the first kaleidoscope was reflective rainbow and gold trimming, given the nature of that object, I felt that I wanted to continue that aesthetic. At the beginning of the semester, I joked to myself I would take my small kaleidoscope and make it bigger and more elaborate. For me, a $7 rainbow kaleidoscope from a toy store, I couldn’t resist the pretty colors. This idea from the beginning was to make a spectacle worth experiencing, it was only a matter of time before I stumbled into what I would unknowingly fall in love with. The ‘aesthetic’ direction would be described as psychedelic rainbow as well spacecraft/future. I don’t believe a “Magnus” kaleidoscope on its original stand by Glenn Straub has come up for sale in several years and I am excited to be able to offer one up for sale! The image is quite clear now that I have cleaned the dust from the eye pieces.*** I am using an iPhone and it doesn’t block all of the glare, unfortunately. ***Apologies for the glare on the detailed photos of the glass images. The kaleidoscope and base are in excellent overall condition with just very minor wear to the surface but no dents, no cracks, no chips, or any major issues whatsoever. The base itself measures about 4” inches on each side and is carved with faceted, angled sides, another elegant touch by this artist. The opening of the eye piece itself measures about 5/16” inch in diameter. The diameter of the object chamber is about 2” inches. The main barrel measures about 6” inches long and has a diameter of 2.4” inches. This is a dry-celled chamber with lamp-worked glass inside the object chamber.Īs it turns, you hear the delicate clink and tumble of glass. We see colorful and unique displays as you turn the optic chamber. It has a wonderful classic design into an interior image with exquisitely precise mirror system, creating a six-point star view on the left eye view and a detailed three-mirror repeating cluster view on the right side. It is signed with his initials GMS carved on the top of the eye piece. I believe there is maple wood on the main barrel with the lighter tone and perhaps bubinga and walnut. This stunning handheld kaleidoscope is made with high quality wood veneers. These kaleidoscopes were the pinnacle of his artwork of the time and now timeless masterpieces of art very difficult to come across. Glenn Straub, a native of Pennsylvania, worked in woods as well as wonderful lampwork glass within his optics at his studio. Up for sale is this one-of-a-kind, rare, vintage 1980s “Magnus” kaleidoscope by master kaleidoscope maker, Glenn Straub.
